I ♥ Lemons. I begin each glorious day with a tall glass of warm water with lemon juice. It's refreshing, invigorating and tasty. I call it my morning power drink. This simple drink also cleanses my digestive tract by stimulating the peristaltic action of my colon....keeping me "regular" every morning. Gotta l♥ve that!Did you know that lemons are high in nutrients? They are an excellent source of vitamin B6, iron and potassium, and a very good source of dietary fiber and vitamin C. They also contain calcium, copper, folic acid, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus and zinc.
Lemons are a great source of bioflavonoids (known for their antioxidant activity), which are natural compounds in some fruits and vegetables. Here are just some of the reasons why we could benefit from bioflavonoids in our diet:
*They protect against damage caused by free radicals, and enhance the antioxidant effects of some nutrients.
*They help maintain capillaries and help the blood clot. Weak capillaries can lead to easy bruising, brain and retinal hemorrhages, bleeding gums and other abnormalities.
*They may help prevent heart diseases.
*They act as natural antibiotics and may protect the body from cancer-causing substances.
Tips:
^Keep lemons at room temperature.
^Buy organic if you want slices in your glass or wash really well to avoid harmful pesticides.
^Push and roll the lemon around on the counter before cutting it open. Doing so loosens up the juices.
^Use fresh lemon juice and not lemon extract found in a bottle.
