Fruit Stickers

Have you noticed the little stickers on your bananas, apples, peaches, pears, mangos, kiwi, and other fruits? Do you know what the numbers mean? Do you know that this little sticker actually tells you how the fruit was grown. It's called the PLU code (price look up code).

Organically grown fruit has a five-numeral PLU prefaced by the number 9. Genetically engineered (GM) fruit has a five-numeral PLU prefaced by the number 8. Conventionally grown fruit, (grown with chemicals inputs), the PLU code on the sticker consists of four numbers.


If it starts with a "9" it's ORGANIC. If it's a four digit number it's not organic. If it starts with a "8" is genetically engineered.
